A friend of mine has a horse with the flu and I was going to plan on having her out to help me with groundwork on thunder. If she visits her horse first and then comes out to visit him, is it very possible for him to catch it? He's had his shots (granted it was only the 6-way). Sorry if this is a lame question, but I know that people can get the flu that way so wasn't sure about horses. Thanks!
oh gosh I'm not sure....ill have to find out. she said she has had it for a week and a half now and i believe she has a snotty nose. i do know that she hasnt been working with her or anything because of it. Ill find out.....
EI is horribly contagious but snotty nose is not so bad...... find out because it will drastically affect wether or not you should let her near your horse
Any respiratory infection is likely to be contageous and both equine influenza and equine herpes are very contageous. Generally respiratory infections are spread via direct contact or contact with anything that has been in contact with the nasal secretions of the sick horse. So yes it is possible for your friend to carry it to your horse.
What exactly was in the 6-way vaccine you gave (there are several different ones on the market) and when was it given? Vaccination against Equine Influenza and Equine Herpes Virus is only effective for about 3-4 months unless you used one of the new vaccines, which you didn't since it was 6-way. And even during that 3-4 months post vaccination it's still possible for your horse to contract these diseases because it's all dependant on your horse's immune system.
You would be better off being sure that your friend helped with your horse before going to see her horse or washed well and changed cloths before coming to help you.
ya that's what I was thinking too. I gave the 6-way 8 weeks ago, but next shots, I do plan on going through the vet. It really isn't that much cheaper using the 6-way from what I hear. THanks for your respons Ryle!
i havent read the rest of the posts so i apologise if i repeat anything.
if your friend visits her horse and then yours, she will have to go through a process to ensure she doesnt spread it to your horse.
1. she must shower and wash her hair
2. change clothes
3. wash but preferably change shoes
4. preferably run her car through a car wash
and 5. make sure she doesnt bring ANYTHING with her that has been anywhere near her horse
EI is passed on in a number of ways: mainly by contact with anything that has been in contact with the horse and by travelling on the air. EI travels for about 8kms on the breeze. it is susceptible to UV light, high temperatures and cleaning products like bleach, laundry detergent and soaps/dishwashing liquids etc
you have to tell your friend to be very very cautious or she will pass on the disease to your horse as well. good luck
"i think she is almost over it and the coughing she is doing is just her getting all the stuff out of her lungs. She hasn't had a snotty nose. Its still viral and just has to finish running its course."
So I don't know....I'm still going to make sure she doesnt come and see him after seeing her horse.

i think thats the best idea the flu is nasty business. its turned my country upside down these last few months. half the country has been in complete lockdown since mid august. millions of dollars lost due to races shut down etc not to mention all the poor horses who have died and all the struggling families that have lost jobs due to the flu. anyway, thats off topic lol
thanks buckaroo. fortunately my horses have escaped the flu so far and are now vaccinated so we should be fine my heart goes out to all the people affected though. the last report said that the country has lost about $45 000 000 in revenue due to the flu  but i suppose we have been lucky for so long to be free of these diseases. i guess things will never be the way they were anymore but people are already starting to learn to live with it
