how to give supplements without too much grain

I have been giving our horses supplements such as Omegahorse shine. I was mixing it with "Cut n Slide", half a scoop, because the feed store said it would not make them hot. I could see that it was making them hotter than normal. I stopped all supplements for a week and they are back to their regular selves. I want to start the black horse on Black as Night but since he is my daughter's horse I do not want to risk making him overly frisky. Any ideas on what I should mix supplements with.

Applesauce works great

I use alfalfa pellets (any hay pellets would work) with just enough water to make them all stick. It works like a charm! I feed an overall supplement, milled flax (Nutra Flax from horsetech.com), and Simplifly. They gobble everything up and do NOT get hot or too fat, and both of mine WILL get hot on even the slightest amount of corn or molasses.

Beet pulp or alfalaf pellets/cubes :) Works great without the sugar high associated with grains!!

Thanks, great ideas. I have some alfalfa pellets that I use instead of treats so I will give it a try. Neither of my horses would eat bute powder in applesause but maybe this would be different. Luvs2ride, why do you like those particular supplements? Do you think Nutraflax is a better flax product than the Omegashine? I have never heard of Simplify.

NutraFlax just doesn't have anything extra in it. That's why I use it. I feed a very complete vitamin/mineral supplement, so I'd rather not have any extras that my horse might not need, or might be too much of something.

I have horsetech.com add some extra amino acids and biotin to it though, to help my mare grow better feet. I love horsetech.com for their customization. They're awesome to work with. Once my vitamins run out, I'm considering having them mix the NutraFlax with their new all-around vit/min supplement, so I just have one bucket for both.

Simplifly is for flies. It kills fly larvae that's laid in the manure. It works GREAT! We hardly ever have any stable or face flies and it doesn't hurt the horses any. We start feeding it in March and keep with it until November (we have a LONG fly season). My horses have been getting it for 5 years now with great results.

You do need to have ALL the horses on the property get it though. It won't work if you board. Your BO will have to agree to buy it for all the horses.

Thanks. I think I will look into that when my Omega runs out. We board at a facility with lots of horses, and cows too, so I have never looked into fly control other that spray because it would not help if we were the only ones using it. But good to know what it is.
