How to locate pain points?

I want to be sure my mare doesn't have any back pain. How can I do this myself?

I'm no expert but when I was thinking my horse was having back pain I climbed up on my mounting block and just kneaded my fingers down both sides of his spine and I actually found a spot where his muscles spasmed when I pressed...
