How many calories?

I know there are about 1000 calories per pound of alfalfa. Here is his diet. How many calories would this be about?

He also gets all you can eat grass hay

4 flakes of alfalfa (about 25lbs)
3 lbs of wet cob (corn, oats and barley)
And his mineral and vitamin sup

Same as AM

He's a hard keeping TB (16.3 hands) and we have lost WAY more weight this winter then I would have liked too. He needs a good 100-150lbs :(

Is this to many calories for him or fine until he gains the weight back then slowly reduce the amount?

This diet has worked before (except he was only getting 2 flakes of alfalfa instead of 4) so I have decided to go back (i have tried more healthier, less sugar diets and that how we ended up where we are)

It looks extreemly high.
COB is about 1.6 Mcals/# or 9.6 Mcals daily
50# alfalfa is about 50 Mcals.
That's roughly 60 Mcals per day. He's going to leave alot of the hay on the ground after he picks the leaves out and waste it.

I know this might sound stupid but im trying to learn more about nutrition. What does the M before Mcal stand for?

Mega. 1Mcal is 1000 cal.
In human terms we measure energy in calories while in horses because the # is so great Mcals.

Typical daily totals for a light horse would be in the 20-35 Mcal range depending upon workload, age, body composition...
