How much turnout does your horse get?

I'm interested in how much everyone turns their horses out.

Personally, I don't think I could have Tara stalled 24/7. Even if I was exercising her daily. I couldn't even do it 12 hours a day. I'd feel bad. I just feel like that can't be good for the mental health of an animal that is meant to graze 24/7, 365 That's just Tara though, and probably me being a softy

Her stall opens to the pasture, so she can come in during the day if it's too hot or the bugs are too bad, but just knowing she can go out if she wants to makes me feel better.

Mine are turned out 24/7/365. IMHO, having a horse stalled all the time is the main reason for vices like cribbing, windsucking, wood chewing, weaving, pawing, etc. Horses get bored just like people do. I compare them standing in a stall to us sitting in a waiting room. Do it too long and you go nuts.

Always remember that feeling of looking at a big, open country over the ears of a good horse, seeing a new trail unwind ahead of you, and that ever-spectacular view from the top of the ridge!!! Follow my training blog: http://robertsontraining.blogspot.com/

Lol it'd be even worse than a waiting room! Like standing in my big closet all day...yuck!

Basically 24/7. We have a 3 acre pasture she goes into during the day and at night she gets "put up", but even that is still a 1 acre lot, just with no grass.

Yeah Tara's pasture has some trees...I wish she'd stand under them and graze instead of walking up to her stall, but oh well. I guess the bugs are pretty bad, even in the shade of the trees.

I'm with Ninja, 24/7 and only trees for shelter. If it was my own place I would have a run-in stall that they could come and go in.
