He's a 16.2hh thoroughbred gelding. I've known him for over 3 years, and he's usually pretty filled out during the summer (he was a summer camp horse) but i've never seen him in the winter untill now.
He is pretty thin. His backbone towards his tail is protruding and you can faintly see his ribs.
He recieves unlimited hay from a round bale daily.
I do not have the ability to grain him everyday. If I were to grain him, I would only be a able to do it about 3 days a week, and it would be around the time i'd ride him (COLIC!)
So i'm at a loss, he needs muscle and weight for the winter. He also doesn't have a very good winter coat (like most thoroughbreds) so he will be wearing a blanket.
Is there anything special I could give him before or after rides and not have him colic?
Help? Thank you.
