howdy y'all could use some advice

I have a 19 year old mare. We used to do all sorts of riding from trail riding to barrel racing. About a year and a half ago, she foundered and I have been working on helping her recover. At my last farrier appointment, he told me that he had cut away the last of the damaged hoof. I rode her quite a bit last summer, but now that winter has set in, it has become difficult to ride. When I do ride, it feels as if my mare has got the energy and spunk that she used to have. I was wondering if it is realistic for me to think about barrel racing recreationally this summer, or maybe team penning?

First, welcome to the forum . I would say that you can start getting her in shape and working the pattern a little bit and if she starts to show any sign of pain, then stop. Or, you could get your vet to look at her and give you an indication of whether he thinks you should or not. With proper hoof care, you should be able to do pretty much anything you were doing before.

Ask your farrier and your vet. They have the experience and know your horse.
