I have a 20+ year old mare that has heaves and they can get pretty bad at sometimes. Every now and again she has what I think is a seizure and freaks out, runs though all the fences and wood. Today I wake up only to find her having one and she was out in the pasture so she tried walking through the fence and cut herself to pieces (poor baby).
I have tried telling the vet what she does but I think they think I'm crazy because they have never seen it. I always try to tape it when it's happening to show the vet later on but I'm in such a panic of getting get halter on and away from the fence to get a video.
This is what it looks like when it happens..
1) Starts pacing back and forth, her veins get really big. Her nostrils flare.
2) Her eyes roll back into her head so all you can see is the whites.
3) She starts convulsing and shaking uncontrollably.
4) She either falls or is REALLY REALLY REALLY off balance and can't walk straight without almost falling over.
5) She gets scared and panics and runs into the fences, cutting herself up or banging herself on everything.
6) This happens for about 10 mins.
7) She starts to calm down and walks in circles, not a strait line.
8- More circles until she is almost back to normal.
The after math of all this happening today is cuts all over her form the fence and lots of swelling from banging herself on the boards.
