My horse had swelling on both of her cheeks yesterday and one underneath her chin, this morning they had gone down but her face was covered in puss. I have bathed her face with water and put her in the field, i went down earlier to see her and she has blood and more puss on her face along with scabs.
Also her fetlocks have swollen up and she is very short footed and stiff.
Could anyone please give advice or tell me what this could be.
You need to quarantine your horse and call the vet immediately.
Pull her up into a stall where she is well away from an other horses. If she will let you, take her temperature. Stalling will also let you monitor how well she is eating and drinking which is important to monitor her condition.
Do you have any idea what this could be? or what could be causing it.
She was in last night, she ate all her food and her haylage, she drank her normal amount of water and she is also eating the grass in the field. She is not in pain as we can touch her all over.
It sounds like some sort of bug bites. Do you live where brown recluse or other venomous spiders are?
I would have a vet look at it when you can. If it is a spider bite, they can get pretty nasty and eat away the tissue around the bite.
My first fear would be strangles, but it could be any number of infections.
The leg swelling could be a complication of strangles called Purpura Hemorrhagica.
No one should be handling this horse and he should be quarantined well away from all other horses. Disinfection of buckets, feeders, and the hands and clothing of people who do have to deal with him is of great importance to help prevent the spread of disease.
This means the horse has a specific halter, buckets, etc and you have specific clothing, gloves, etc for handling this horse. If it is strangles (which is the most likely thing) is only takes 1 bacteria to infect the rest of your herd. Watch all the horses very carefully and religiously take their temps and watch for any swelling in the jaw area. Phone the vet and tell them you have a suspected case of strangles and they should respond as quickly as possible to get you horse treated.
