My mare is up for her biannual Osphos injections. The Osphos finally came in the only needles I have right now that are 1 1/2 inches are 18g. We rarely give people IMs with 18g needles, but obviously horses are much bigger. Would 18g be ok?
18 g will work fine, it's pretty much all I ever use. I do stick the needle in first, then attach the syringe so I don't waste expensive meds if someone jumps.
Awesome, thanks! I feel like I had the same delema last time and I went with the 18g. I'm a needlephobe, so I shutter at the thought of anyone using on on me.
Oh, ok, all on the same day? Or spread out? I have one mare who can be a bit difficult about her shots, but I just shoulder twitch her and she'll stand pretty well.
All in the same day. It doesn't help that she has a weeks worth of sass in her from not being ridden, PLUS it was a cold, rainy, windy day. I gave her the fall vaccines with out a problem a few days ago. It came with a 20g, didn't seem to bother her nearly as much. She didn't even lift her head up from the grass!
I've definitely seen some "dramatic" (aka hissy fit lol) reactions in my sheep, esp when you have to give repeated shots. Heck I thought I gave one a SEIZURE the other day the second WORMER hit her lips.....nope, just sheep drama lol.
I haven't had to give multiple shots to a horse, but know some that are plenty dramatic with one, so it could definitely just be that lol.
I tried to make amends with her by offering her a slice of birthday cake. She just turn her head, backed away slowly and snorted! I could only imagine what's going on in that tiny mare brain!!
