Important HYPP survey! ALL TAKE PART!

HYPP=hyperkalemic periodic paralysis also know as Impressive sydrome is genetic defect or disease that exploded when one infected stud, Impressive was bred to over 2000 mares unknowingly about this dominate trait in the Impressive line. HYPP attacks cause a horse to be unable to move for a short period of time. Infected horses can be managed with a low pottasium diet and other specific life style changes.

I am planning to do a in depth article about HYPP and I would like to conduct a survey to see how HYPP infected horses are owned by members on this forum. If you have a HYPP infected horse I would be very interested in how you take care of the horses specific needs.

Read each choice carefully

Logan is a rescue believed to be QH but no way of knowing for sure as we were told his dam was never bred (she came from auction). She looks QH, he looks QH, but who knows. So I do not know his lineage at all but I DID have him tested and he is N/N

No quarter horses here, and the QH we had years back didn't have Impressive in her lines. I am, however, aware of the condition.

One of our horses, Harley, has Impressive in him. He was tested and came back N/N. We met someone that had a horse with Impressive and he was P/P. That horse was a total wreck when the seizures kicked in. It was difficult to watch.

My paint Dallas does not have Impressive anywhere on his pedigree, and he does not have HYPP. One of the things I love about him is his great bloodlines, in which there is no line breeding. He has lots of champions on his papers, none with genetic health issues.

Shaymus is a MorganXQH. He also does not have Impressive anywhere in him, and does not have HYPP.

My mare has Impressive lines top and bottom.

She is N/N and so are her parents.

My stallion is Impressive tail like. Every horse from Impressive to him are N/N.

What you need to do is do a lot of research. GO to AQHA and UC Davis web sites and get the facts.

Like HyPP dose not infect a horse it is a genetic disorder. It is importent to not only get all the facts but also use the proper terminology. This way there is no misunderstanding and people get facts and not misinformation. Which I see quite a bit.

I have read that horses of others breeds can have HYPP.

*Oh my gosh I just realized what you mean by infected. Missed that.

But do you have paints or appy's they can also carry the impressive gene, as well as grade horse that are not known. I have seen a lot of QH's that are not registered with the AQHA but instead registered with color registries like the IBHA and such. I am assuming that is to avoid testing!
