Injections or meds?

Harley my quarter horse got kicked in his stifle 6years ago and the barn owner left him in the pasture and did nothing while we were on vacation for a week. He had a deep bone bruise and we did everything the vet said to do he was fine for the past few years now it's starting to bug him. My vet said we could do chiro, injections or maybe supplements

I'd like to take him on a few trial rides during the summers but not if it's going to hurt him. Anyone deal with this before or have any ideas. He loves to go down the trails and loves to be ridden I'd hate to not ride him when he enjoys it so much. He's also a big built horse with the old fashion quarter horse type with big bones and hooves and body build.
