Input wanted on saddle bred

so I got a saddle bred end of summer being of fall he was under weight we started feeding him slowly working him up to what he should be eating when winter hit we get round bales when he had hay 24/7 he got kinda fat (looks good tho to what he was) what would be the best way to trun his now fat into healthy muscles

exercise is the only way I know to turn fat into muscle.

Start riding him gently in the spring. He'll shape up in no time.

we been going on walks as often as I can threw the last few days he's 14 I think he has been threw some pretty bad homes his ribs where showing and he almost looked sick when I got him and I have never had one like him he is loving one min and hateful the next almost like he hasn't made up his mind if i'm going to hurt him or not so any inputs is helpfully he is about 16.1 and getting close to 1300 lbs

Welcome to the awesome world of saddlebreds.
It sounds like you did a good job getting the weight on, but now that he is ....fat, have you reduced his rations to a 'maintenance' level?
If your beginning to work him now, I would wait and see. Saddlebreds can be a little hard to keep.
Working him is the only way to get him fit. Just like people you can get inshape sitting around. If your fearful of trying under saddle now, keep working on the ground. Lunge him, poles on the ground, ground drive him, anything to make him move.

Once a saddlebred does trust you, they will do anything for you, but it takes time. These guys are much smarter than most breeds and can take a little more time to trust. Just hang out with him with no expectations sometimes. He will figure out your a friend that just wants to go adventures with him.

I do ride him I started riding a month after I got him a lil we been on 2 trail rides he is like bomb proof he will walk right up to a car and look in the window I can't say he doesnt trust me he lets me pick his hoofs but only me when the other girl trys he throws a fit when it started geting cold I started riding bareback as offen as I can to get him to just walk around a lil I do have lots of pics from when I first got him till now I used pics to keep track of his weight because it was hard to tell when you see him every day
