Interesting study-sleep patterns-Straw vs shavings
This is a discussion on Interesting study-sleep patterns-Straw vs shavings within the Horse Health forums, part of the Keeping and Caring for Horses category
Interesting! I have always liked straw better, but I don't stall Casey so we don't use any, but when we go places where there is stalls, I use straw. Typically cheaper, warmer, and I think it looks nicer in a stall. I do have to admit, shavings sure do smell good though! Straw also decomposes easier, and can be put in fields when composted.
Very interesting--thanks for sharing!
I used a base of 1-2 packages of 40 lbs equifresh (UNwet), then shavings, then I top with straw. I talked to a University Vet professor many years ago, and he said that his father wintered show Belgians on oat straw. I don't know if he also bedded them on it, as well, but his POINT was that all horses needs lots of roughage, and that they eat about 8 small meals/day.
