Itchy Horse

My horse has an itching problem, i keep fly spray on him but if anything bites him he scratches the bite till it bleeds and all the hair around the area is gone. I had the same problem last year and one bite got so bad i had to call a vet out. His main areas are on his neck and face. Any suggestions on what I can do to help with the itching and is there something i can wash him with that will help with the hair regrowth

Two of my horses have the same problem. My Vet suggested putting them on an antihistamine - I use HistAll - I get it from Valley Vet. I can say it has worked well this past spring and I am still using it because of bites. My Vet also told me to get some Vitamin E oil and use it on the face. She said it could help with hair re-growth. I use a horse shampoo that has Tea Tree Oil in it - that seems to help with itching. I use a medicated shampoo for the tails. Good luck - hope this helps.

My horse gets bugged (literally) by gnats on his belly every year. I've had some luck with cortizone creams, but I just read that 2 ounces of flax seed meal each day supposedly helps with sweet itch and other itch related conditions. I think because it's so rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Regardless, can't help to try it out.
