Yea... I mean that's not to say it isnt pigeon fever. The first time when she got a little bit of blood out of what loked like a hematoma.... she looked at it under a microscope.... and it was just normal blood cells. So what ever it was hadnt matured or developed till saturday. Right now we are keeping him off antibiotics.... cause she said the treatment for pigeon fever is just letting it run its course. If its just an abcess from a kick... He will go on antibiotics for awhile. And if its something else.... we will treat accordingly. Im just glad I have an amazing vet. She has checked on him almost everday since it started, will pull him out and take a look if Im at work! Free of charge. My total vet bills thus far are less than $100!

I don't mind doing gross things with horses or other animals, but I can't stand anything with people. Weird like that, I am. Hope your horse feels better soon!

Thanks everyone. The swelling has gone down a ton. Only about a quarter of the size it was.
And we got the culture back today. It is indeed Pigeon Fever.

So far the worst part has been not knowing because there was nothing to culture. But my vet seems to think he will be good as new in a couple weeks.

I had a gelding with a PF abscess exactly like that! Looked like golfball exploded out of his chest! He may have a divot there. My guy does. It heals INCREDIBLY fast!

Hope he's feeling better soon and it heals up soon!

Natisha and waresbear I like draining abscesses as well. Something about just knowing how much better you feel once it's out...

Yikes! That's a big one! I agree with waresbear though, I bet it feels so relieving for them! Also, it's somewhat satisfying to clean it all out..
