a long time ago I found out to use either lubricatiing fluid like KY Jelly ( I use the generic version) or baby oil... they don't harm the good bacteria (which can cause irritation) and it doesn't cause irritation if left on the skin.
The first time I had it done by the vet to show me how (He didn't like the vet doing it, but is fine with me doing it...go figure). Be careful. The most well mannered horses can get pretty defensive down by that sensitive part,no matter how well you know them. So always be watchful. As you never know what could be sore (if they have a big bean!) or what they will act like in that very sensitive area.
also don't forget to sing the sheath cleaning song while you work!! :) will definitely make you laugh! Lol
P.S the blind pouch (where the bean is located) is NOT inside the urethra, as the above article states, it is "around" the urethra. Do not stick your finger up your horse's urethra...it is very unpleasant for him, and could cause an infection of the area.
