Keeping stalled horses happy

I'm happy to be moving from a stressful boarding situation to a new barn, however........even though the new place is better in many ways......... my horse will be stalled a lot more She will have a 12X16 stall (no run) There is an outdoor arena that we can use for turn out (we just have to work out times between the boarders) and I'm doing my own cleaning etc so she will get some free turnout everyday and I'm going to work her of course (we have a large indoor arena as well) Is anyone in a similar situation and what do you do to keep a primarily stalled horse happy and healthy and as unstressed as possible? I'm going to get some Likits and stall balls and stuff...... any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

That remains to be seen at this point........we move on Monday

My one horse didn't like the likits that we got him. So we bought this thing called a Jimmy's Ball. I'm not sure what it has in it, but Gem loves it. That keeps him occupied for a while. (now its about a week or so) but he absolutely loves it. He's not stalled for too long. He goes out every day, but when the weather is stinky, he's indoors, and he gets very bored. My fiance and I noticed that when he has his Jimmy's Ball, he's a lot calmer.

I think you can get them at any tack shop, but you can also order online. I just got his last from from Smart Pak

Is there a particular reason why you are keeping indoors?

Appy, I've seen it in horse stalls at the Expo and it certainly kept the ottb occupied for while. I was trying to find it in local stores but with no success. Thanks for publishing the link!

You're welcome! Gem loves it. He has found a way to push it up against a wall and eat it. Even though its a distance away from the wall. He also tries to take chunks out of it, but I keep telling him, he has to lick it, then bite.

The first one lasted him a couple weeks, if not more. Now it's usually gone by a week.

Just curious, do you know what it's made of? There is no info on site...

They're made out of sweet feed specially processed to stick together and last a long time.

Just as an FYI, if you have a white horse, their face tends to get dirty by eating it. I'll have to take a picture of Gem when he's all finished with it. It cleans up easy tho.

I'd still like to know how long your horse is going to be stabled everyday... I presonally am 100% against "20/7 indoor board" as I call it. Otherwise known as partial turn-out where the horse is just turned out for a few hours a day (if they're lucky) then stuck back in a stall. I think it causes neurotic behaviour and possibly could have physical complications as well.
The only time I kept my horses inside were bad winters, and they would come in at 4pm and be kicked back out at 8am. During late spring/summer/early fall they would stay out 24/7.
