Kudos for my barefoot trim!

A couple of weeks ago, I went to my friend's house and trimmed the hooves on several horses for her. Two were quite bad with cracks and self-trimming, the rest just long. One of her horses she says has always been toed out. When I looked at his feet, his inside heels were higher than the outside, so I made them even and then took off just a tidge more on the inside. As I am NOT a professional, and was doing this as a favour, I made sure my friend understood what I was doing and my reasoning. She said, go for it.

Now, two weeks have passed and she says this horse is better than ever. She feels that I did a better job than her regular farrier ever did (whom I have met and don't like his methods, but that's another tale). So kudos to me for making a happier horse and owner.

But the point of this post is to show that formal education, letters after people's names and, yes, even years of experience, don't all add up to a perfect farrier, vet, dentist, trainer.... whatever. In my opinion, all of this is good, but it is important for the service provider to listen to the person that knows the horse and also to have an open mind for a continuous learning curve. No amount of schooling or experience is any good without an open, receptive mind!

So for anyone that feels uncomfortable asking for a 2nd opinion after the first professional has diagnosed... this thread is for you.
