loosing hair

My 18 yr old quarter horse is loosing hair around his mouth and eyes. There is no hair there and is black in color. Anyone see this ever? I'm a new horse owner so I don't know if I need to call in the vet or over reacting?

Our mare Dixie did this last summer. We've never called the vet about it. I attached a picture of what she looks like when she does it. Does it look like what your horse has?

It will be interesting to see what others say.

It does look like your mare Dixie exact same places. Do you know why it happens my 3 1/2 yr old paint doesn't have it. Is it cause he's older?

Dixie's 14 so I don't know if it's age or not. It only lasted about 2 or 3 months then it went away. Dixie was also the only one who had it at our barn. I don't know what caused it. I wish I new what caused it, but I don't. Is he rubbing and scratching his face a lot?

Yes I see him rubbing his face on his leg but no more than she does. I wouldn't say alot I only seen him do it a few times. I know the are sheding there winter coat right now and it makes them ichy. I brush them 2 times a day now to help get the hair out. Is that too much to brush them? Thanks for the reply I allready feal better about it. There my buddys you know I worry lol!

I don't know what causes it.....You could always call your vet and ask what they think. Someone else on the forum also might know about it.

In the summer I brush my horses hours at a time sometimes 2+ times a day. It's a bit different this time of the year though, just make sure you watch them because when they start loosing this time of year they can get real cold. I've been brushing my horses 2 times a day but I haven't used my shedding block or curry comb very much yet.
