Losing HAIR =/

I am so sick of this issue! Two years ago duke began to lose his mane.. it then spread to his neck.. ill show pictures soon.. it only happens during the summer.. people I have talked to says its the heat. This has happened twice before! The first time it went away fairly quickly by itself... the second time it was horrible.. so a vet told me to delute bleach in a bucket filled with water.. I did so... everyday almost..for about four weeks, maybe even longer... and duke finally quit losing his hair.. I have tried MTG that did nothing but make him lose his hair more.. and I did exactly what the bottle said.. so... duke is losing his mane yet again.. I am bleaching his mane(deluted bleach that is).... but is there anything else I could try? In the past I tried miracle mist.. I found a product called happy jack's skin balm.. does anyone have experience with this product?

I refuse to let this skin problem win again and duke lose his mane! HELP! Lol

I wonder if spraying CalmCoat on it would help, or possibly feeding coat supplements.

Did the vet tell you the reason to use bleach?



No idea why your horse is loosing his mane or what the bleach is doing to prevent it, but I have used Listerine in many applications where I used to use bleach.

Sounds like a fungus, if the vet is advising a diluted bleach solution.

My 'crud buster' cure for fungus is 1/3 bleach, 1/3 generic Listerine, and 1/3 water. Usually cures it up within a week.

And no my vet didnt explain.. and if he did I don't remember seeing as it was about two years ago. Lol.. but the vet is coming out tomorrow to give vaccines to duke so I may just ask..

When yall use that mixture... do yall rinse it off with water or leave it in the coat??

How old is your horse?

It looks like he has a thick coat- have you thought about body clipping him? If it is a fungus, maybe that will help keep it down. Also how much do you bath? Maybe you need to wash more to keep the skin/hair clean?

It looks more like rubbing to me. Do you feed using cattle-type round bale feeders? Like these?



If so, THAT is your culprit. Ditch the feeders in favor of tombstone style horse round bale feeders or the plastic solid ones from AGI. I use those and they work great, and are easy to move around.

I use the 32" tall feeders.

If you don't use a round bale feeder, then I would get your horse on some antihistimines and flax meal, wash the affected area with betadine scrube, and use MTG twice a week.

You obviously didn't read the OP's first post very carefully, luvs2. She said MTG didn't help.
