losing hair on front armpits

My gelding loses hair on his armpits. I guess that's probably not the right terminology but I don't have any gear rubbing there and I guess it is just caused by friction. Has anyone else seen this and is it normal? Is there anything I can do about it?

Sounds like girth gall. A search should yield you plenty of info on this, good luck!

Some horses really do have thin skin and light hair coverage, especially in those areas. Or, if he's spending a lot of time lying down, could his hoof be rubbing in that area? When they fold the front leg, the hoof can tuck right up behind the elbow and rub the horse.
