I'm not a vet, but if it is a sprain, less limp is indeed better. Watch out, though, if he's like our young mares, as soon as they start to feel better, they start running around again and can reinjure it. We confine our sprained mares to a small paddock with good footing or a stall for a couple days and then wrap the joint and do some walking in hand. They've always healed up in about 5 days and put them back on the trail after 2 weeks.
If it gets noticeably worse, or doesn't keep improving, time to call the vet in.
