Mane falling out?!

My boy's mane has started falling out by the handful. Its combed through every day with your general comb you get in a tack store.

Its not too long.. could do with a smartening up, but it is in good condition. Nice shine, no dandruff or rubbing. His tail is also fine. It literally comes out at the roots, and there is no resistance apart from normal tangles that means I am ripping it out.

Trainer was shocked and said she's not seen anything like it.

Could it be a mineral deficiency??

Did, not anymore. This didn't happen with the rug, and it was off for over two weeks before the mane started falling out. I did have that line of thought, but it just didn't really connect...
