If it's deep enough that drainage is a worry, I would get a vet because you don't know what kind of funk could by lying in that cut. Infection is a very unpredictable thing and you want to make sure you are controlling it correctly. It could seem all fine and dandy one minute, and an hour later you have a smelly, oozy, puffy sore full of gangrene.
I don't mean to scare you, but I've seen it with horses. If a vet isn't called, keep it clean, keep it clean, keep it clean! If it begins to smell funny (like spoiled meat) get a vet out asap.
