Mare hormones

I have a mare that is still lactating 1 year after weaning her baby. I did everything you would normally do when weaning, taking her off her feed then lowering protein ration. I don't care that she squirts milk once in awhile, the problem is she get a case of mastitis about every 3 months. Our Vet has suggested a hormone that stops the estrus cycle so she dosn't go into season at all. He thinks this will help to dry her up for good. Has anyone used this hormone? Sorry I don't remember what its called.
