Mare INSANE during cycle..

Just a thought--did you know that mares have been (periodically) spayed for about 100 years? I have a very old farmer's book--printed in 1914, I believe--that talks about this. You might want to talk to your Vet and run the numbers to see if it's worth getting her OFF of all hormones.

I have a LOVELY and sweet mare--best out of 7 I've owned over the years, along with about 25 geldings I've owned--who goes into heat about every month. She loves on you while in heat--no ears pinned or kicking. She has high hopes that my 2 geldings will "grow back a pair" and help her out. Yes, Virginia, they DO exist.

All three of ours get lovey too when they go in heat. Lucy is one that has attitude but that's because she's from Lucifer, lol.

I've done Depo Provera shots on a mare in the past. About once every 45 days, and eventually as she got older, I didn't need them anymore. We speculated that she just really had painful ovulations. My vet (at that time, 7 years or more ago) advised against the implants as they left considerable scarring at the insertion site and had to be redone every 45-60 days. The marble was a new thing then and not many did them, so he didn't have an opinion on that.

With Regumate, it isn't just that it's a hormone that can screw up our (women's) cycles and hormones, it's a known carcinogen. I always have used gloves & a liquid proof apron when handling that stuff, it's just wicked.
