Mare needs to lose weight!!

My mare is a very healthy mare but over the winter she put on a lot of weight and I wasn't able to ride her a lot due to a death in the family and other things!! But I'm wanting to get her fit and ready for the rodeo's and jackpots coming up in may and I was wandering what would be a good way to make her lose weight exercise wise?? She never gets fat I usuallly ride everyday that I can but like I said...

What worked for me when I had to make my mustang lose weight was lots of long trotting. Work up to it with walking and then bits of trotting, and when she's ready for more start adding to it. Eventually you'll be doing an hour or more of a ground covering trot. Doing this is also a good excuse to get out of the arena.
