Melanoma? Can anyone help?

Hello all.. Im new on this site and I have been around horses for over 13 years.

I (a few days ago) traded an english mare for my western horse. However I was told she had a wart on her back I knew that I should have thought about the trade but I fell in love with the mare instantly. I had a look under her tail the day after we traded because I couldnt sleep thinking about the lump. I saw she has melanoma under her tail. (same as out tb gelding) It doesnt bother her at all you can ride her ect and it doesnt seem to mess with her. However I am still worried about it on her back. No matter how much reaserch I do I can't find anything about melanoma on a horses back. Is it possible for it to form on her back? The lump on her back is a bit smaller then an inch and about a half inch tall..

Anyways can anyone help me? I called the vet and im just waiting to hear back from them.

That would be a weird place for a melanoma. Is it hair covered? Is it about where the back of a saddle would be? Is it centered over the spine or off to one side? Without seeing it I am guessing it sounds more like a bump caused by saddle bridging, depending on where it is located.
I take it you did not have a prepurchase done?

Thank you for your fast response.. I would post a pic but im not sure how too.. I thought it was a weird spot as well. The lady said her trainer thought it was a wart but only one? And just on her back? Not sure.. Its off a ways from the spine. There is no hair on the lump itself. On the sides there is kind of. It is where the saddle is.. Just not sure what to do anout it.. I've not had any experience with melanoma other then our tb gelding. Thank you again for your fast reply

P.s it is where your leg would be (ish) in an english saddle.

It could be a sarcoid, it could be a spot, but it could very well be melanoma. I'm presuming this is a gray horse? The myth that melanoma is benign is just that....a myth. If possible, all tumors should be removed at the soonest opportunity. Once they take off, they go hard and fast.

Skin cancer in horses - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I know sarcoid actually can be treated with some kind of ointment and some people swear by fluoride tooth paste (do a search here - there was 2 or 3 threads in past on that).

Edit: you have to talk to vet to be sure what your horse has.
