More feed questions :D

With all these feed talk, i'm getting very very intrigued.

The thought of a simple ration balancer seems pretty cool.

If you can suggest something for each horse, that would be great :)

Vega-5 years old. Hypp NH (If you need more info on that, let me know)
-Not really in work. I've been riding her, but only for about 20 min and only at a walk.
-Turned out in the day, stalled at night.
-Has access to a round bale while turned out. Gets 2-3 flakes while in the stall.
-She is currently on (If memory serves me right) Purina Horseman's Edge Pelleted.
-She gets 2 quarts 2x a day (4 quarts total per day)

I've tracked her weight and she's been a steady 1035 lbs.

Gem-9 years old
-Not being worked.
-Turned out during the day, stalled at night.
-Has access to a round bale while turned out. Gets 2-3 flakes while in the stall.
-He is currently on Purine Horseman's Edge sweet feed.
-He gets 2 quarts 2x a day and gets rice bran just in the AM(not sure how much rice bran, I'll have to ask my BO)

Gem has been around 1,100 lbs.

Montana- 15 years old
-Worked 3-4 times a week
-Turned out during the day, stalled at night.
-Has access to a round bale while turned out. Gets 2-3 flakes while in the stall.
-He is currently on Purine Horseman's Edge sweet feed.
-He gets 2 quarts 2x a day and gets rice bran just in the AM(not sure how much rice bran, I'll have to ask my BO)

Montana has gained 15 pounds. He went from 1,065 to 1080

I haven't noticed any of them acting weird or anything, but I would just like to see what else they could be getting fed, and if it's cheaper, I'd like to do it.

A ration balancer won't work for Vega because of the Potassium levels ... the nest thing for her is oats and alfalfa hay if I remember right ....

The other two would prob do GREAT on a ration balancer might give Montana soem beet pulp 1 or 2 lbs in the evening with the ration balancer and at least 1lb of rice bran to encourage the weight gain ...

Glad to know that Vega won't do well on a RB.

oats and alfalfa hay
Do you mean like meals of oats with alfalfa hay? Or Oats for her meals and for her to have access to alfalfa hay?

I might not want to switch her to alfalfa hay just because she is doing well on the hay she has now. I would hate to change her hay and have an episode (it has happened. Not to Vega, but to other horses)

Also, what type of oats would you recommend?

I should give Montana both rice bran and beet pulp or just one of them?

What type of RB do you suggest? Or should I just go on your other thread and see what's close to me?

Not sure if you can answer this, but do you think all three are at a good weight? I can get pictures if you need.

IF Montana still needs to gain weight I would addd some beet pulp to his feed for extra calories ...

I really like Kent's Horsego32 but it may bot be avaibale to you

Let me find teh HYPP diet again :)

I am glad you asked that question about the hay ... it actually says to AVOID alfalf hay and look for Oat hay !!

And everybody have heart failure for the HYPP horse it suggest Ceral grain because they are low in Potassium and to avoid any feed contain Molasses

HA this is the site that anybody with a HYPP H/H or N/H horse NEEDS to read seems to be the leading edge on them from my understanding

I have been to the last link numerous times and honestly, I looked at the feeds, knew what to feed and not to feed, but I never focused on it because I was/am boarding.

I think I'll talk to my BO about switching my guys. I would like Vega to be on a better diet. Even though she eats her food, i'd prefer something else. Gem seems to love the sweet feed. He was on crap food before hand, so he's loving it, but i'd prefer him to be on something better.
Montana has been on the same sweet feed (He was getting about 2 pounds of Purina senior 2x a day, plus 2 pounds of the sweet feed 2x a day) with his previous owner, but we've cut that down because he now has access to hay.

I'll see how his weight does without the beet pulp. If need be, I'll add it.

I don't think I can get Kent's Horsego32 around me. Anything similar to that?

The ration balancer thread has all the companies that make one listed

Since you can get Purina then you can get the Enrich32 ...
