MSM vs. Cosequin Asu

So, in hopes to try and save money (ha!) I've been wondering if there is a cheaper alternative to help support my boys joints. Here is alittle background.

Breed- grade paint(?)
12 year old gelding
2 degrees of rotation in his coffin
Pretty severe navicular
On 60 isox/day as well as 1/4 of a previcox 2x a day

Currently he's on Cosequin asu and I guess it's okay. His joints don't pop anymore but I know Cosequin is apparently some "good stuff" and used and liked by many. In efforts to save some cash what would be the difference if I tried putting him on just plain MSM? The vet told me to keep him on Cosequin because its different from the previcox and will help. (He didn't specifically say Cosequin but he was just referring to the fact that I already use it. He did want me to keep him on a joint supplement, though)

Any input?

Also, I have a 16 yr old haflinger who I was going to put on Smartpaks senior herb free joint supplement but that too is a bit pricey.

What are the pros as cons between Cosequin or smartpak senior joint supplement and MSM??

I don't think you will be happy with just the MSM. It didn't work for my mare. I may be wrong, but I think MSM works best in conjunction with something else. I used to have SmartFlex from SmartPak but it got too expensive so now I use the Dumor brand from Tractor Supply and also use B-L Pellets and that combo really works for my girl and is cheaper.
