Murray is lame =[

Just back from the barn. Upsetting as I found out Murray is lame. He moved 3 steps for me when I noticed. This is the first time I EVER had him lame in the 3 years of owning him.

A boarder, Tamara, was there at the time so I went to get her help. We tried the grain method but he wouldn't budge. So she left to get Roger the BO and I tried to see how far I can get Murray to move. It wasn't much. So I sprayed him down with fly spray. Tamara came back and told me she couldn't get a hold of Roger but left me with his phone numbers and her number to call and see.

So far, he is in the fields on the soft ground grazing. Myself and Tamara left messages on Roger's phones and we are waiting to see what will happen. We both guess that since the area had tons of rain storms lately, he must have spooked or was running and slipped, causing his injury.

I'm hoping for the best. If anyone has information regarding lameness, I would gladly love to have it as this is a first for me. He does have a bump above his hoof that is a concern to both me and Tamara. Thanks everyone.

Is there any swelling in any of his legs? Cuts? Maybe he just has an abcess it can make them dead lame in one leg and then 2-3 weeks later they are fine once it bursts out.

Is the bump on the coronet band and blackish? If so it could be the abcess.

Hey Chella, I just found out that both Roger and Tamara talked and they are guessing it is an abcess. I will find out more later tonight.

Two common causes are sprains and abcesses, and sprains often occur when slipping in muddy/poor footing.

Is he 3 legged lame (hobbling) or just limping a bit?
Does the bump feel like swelling and/or does it feel warm? (often a sprain).

If you think it could be a sprain, you'll want treat similar to a twisted ankle...limit movement to a small, level paddock or stall and cold hose/ice it to reduce swelling. If it's a bad sprain, bute will help the pain and swelling, too.

If that's it, a little bute and some epsom salt soaks helps them get through it:)

If the bump is at the band, it most likely is an abcess. In my experience, abcsesses that pop out at the band seem to be much more painful, often causing 3 legged lameness very suddenly. Once it pops and starts to drain, though, they are back to normal within a few days. No need to limit movement for an abcess as movement sometimes helps it along. As you said, epsom salts, a little bute, and time.

Thanks guys. The believed abscess is right above the hoof, on the pastern. Wish I had taken a photo for a better idea of it. I will later tonight.
