Muzzle Injury Help

My horse somehow put a hole in his muzzle and chipped an incisor. I already had the vet out, and my horse got stitches, antibiotics and bute. My horse has managed to get a few of the stitches out, which I am told by my vet is not a huge problem. However, I am looking for any ideas on the best way to keep the muzzle wound clean. I know flushing it with saline will help, but being it is the bottom of the muzzle, it will be dirty a lot. Any ideas on the best way to keep it as clean as possible?

Along with this ^^^^^. Buy Vetericyn gel spray. TSC or your local Co-op or feed store should carry it.

After you clean the hole, spray the gel right into it. This stuff works miracles in the healing process.

I adopted my neighbor's 12 yr old Weimaraner when they moved away. She came to me with a literal baseball sized tumor hanging under one armpit and fifty cent sized tumor hanging under the other armpit. $500 later, at the surgery center 40 miles away, she came home minus the tumors.

BUT the Old Gal manage to tear the stitches out in less than ten days, leaving a HUGE gaping hole into the inner workings of her armpit.

Instead of using the skin sealer the vet gave me, I sprayed the Vetericyn gel right into the opening twice daily. Slowly the hole healed shut from the inside-out like it was supposed to and without infection. It took about three weeks but today, the skin has grown shut and there is not any swelling or redness.

I don't know what the secret ingredient is in Vetericyn and I don't care. That stuff is the best and most legitimate "snake oil" to ever come down the pike:)

I've dealt with plenty of mouth wounds including a very similar one recently.

Just do the saline as the vet directed. I'd flush it after eating, at least twice a day. The horse we just dealt with did not get stitches though it did go all the way through. All we did for the first bit was flush it, didn't add anything until it had closed (then just antibiotic on the outside).

Anything you spray will just get into his mouth, not good. Also, it will come right back off, so no point. Mouths heal amazingly well. Just use the saline and keep it clean. He has the antibiotics. You probably won't even see it soon enough!
