Muzzle skin Issue

I have here a 7 Yo QH, who I have discovered is starting have a bit of Muzzle sunburn. However, there is more when looking further....
What I think here, and I would appreciate all input, looks to me like a type of fungus. It is semi-hard (the lesions in the photo) the are greyish in color, they are bi-lateral, and completely around the nostril area.
This horse is in a not-so-perfect turnout, lots of Lord-knows-what plant life, some overgrowth, and spends to my best guess 10-12 hours a day in turnout. Two other unknown pasture mates...Not sure how long this has been going on. This is all the current info I have.
I am new to this horse, so until further medical intervention can be had, and thoughts?
Thanks, -Lw

Could be a fungus of some kind, or warts. Some horses get warts around the nostrils or in the ears. I had a mare that had something similiar in her ear, and she outgrew it (cleared up in about a year, she was a yearling when she got it).

It looks to me like he's gotten sunburned and may have scraped his nose around on some hard terrain while looking for grass. It may be sores that got hard scabbed around and he's getting "chapped" areas around his nose.

For the sunburn, it's okay to use Zinc-Oxide lotion. It's safe for babies and works.
