My horse has a knot on his knee...

Is it possible that this knot effects his leads in the canter? I literally can only get his left lead 1/100 times I ask, and the knot is on his left front leg. I'm not sure what it is, I use linament on the area and gluocosamine orally for him. Any other ideas of what to use? He's had this for as long as I can remember, and he hasn't limped anytime recently. I believe that he has been on bute before too but it didn't help the lead problem.
