My horses neck is swollen

Hi, I am a first time horse owner and I have a concern about my 16 year old appy gelding.

For a couple of weeks 5 or 6, his neck has been swollen in the front you can feel his....I'm guessing trachea or esophogus. You can feel the ridges on it. I've asked my instructor and the lady I am boarding with and they say it looks def. abnormal and theyve never seen it before but said that since he is eating and drinking fine to not worry to much but I should call a vet if it doesnt get better. Now he has been eating fine except for on saturday and sunday he choked eating his grain. My faullt sunday for giving him the grain in the first place since he just choked on saturday.

He's been gaining weight finally on the good grass now and he is otherwise acting perfectly normal..eating drinking pooping and I ride him probably once a week and he is acting totally normal.

What could this be and does anyone know where I can find pictures that I could sort of compare to his neck?

It could really be anything. Your best bet would be to get a vet out. Good luck, hope he's okay.

Two choke episodes in as many days would be reason enough for me to have the vet out. Also, I wouldn't consider a horse who has had those two episodes to be "eating and drinking fine" - another reason to have the vet out. The swelling may or may not be related to the choke (I lean towards is), but either issue would be worth investigating to me.

I am going to try and get a picture tonight so I can show everyone. Maybe then you wont be as concerned as how I am saying is really hard to explain.
