I have a mare who one day came up a little lame and had a huge swollen back leg. We soaked it in cold water and buted her for a week. The swelling went down some then it started oozing and her skin started to peel off around the oozing spots. Then she got scabs and it kept staying swelled. Took her to a vet and gave her a shot of antibiotics that lasted 4 days then had to get another shot right after that of the same stuff. (I forgot what it was but it kinda sounded like enzymes.) He also put a heat wrap on it to reduce swelling. The swelling went down but came back after the wrap was taken off. Then we started treated her scabs from her peeling skin like scratches. The scabs are almost clear but one small spot and keep it wrapped. But my question now is why is it still swelling without the wrap and the scabs cleared up?
this is what it looked like a few days ago when teh scabs were still there
We took her to two vets now, and neither knew. It's a mystery. Those scabs are about gone now but the swelling still comes up if I leave it unwrapped. They weren't sure what kind of infection it was.
It looks similar to something that happened with my mare's shoulder.
But she was healing up from a drastic injury before, and the original wound had just closed up. The swelling started coming full blown and it looked like the skin was bubbling which then opened, oozed, and went to scabs just like your picture.
Figured that something had gotten into the wound that we had missed and when the skin healed over it, it formed an abscess of sorts. Only, I couldn't tell if the swelling went down with the scabs healing as she was always swollen off and on during those healing days.
Is it possible that she got some slivers of sort? And they just haven't all made it out yet?
Sounds like an allergic reaction to a foreign body. Did she have an open wound? Could there be something under the skin? Also some fungus' will cause these symptoms. The swelling looks as if it starts below the fetlock, is there heat, could the hoof be involved?
