Need to put weight on a foal before winter!!!

New here and need a little advice. First it has been at least a decade since I've been around horses till this past summer, when I resuced a 6yr old Red Roan. Now this past week-end I was asked how I felt about taking in a 7 or 8 month old paint colt that someone tired to a fire number post to get rid of him and left him out there till someone took him. A freind of a freind took him in but did not have room or money for another horse. After seeing the poor boy and his story, I agreed. He is uwfully thin and winter is coming quick. I would like to get some weight on him quick. He has access to good hay and water. Additionally we are giving him 16% sweet feed with a cup of milk replacment on it (dry) daily. Are there aother things we can be doing. Northern Minnesota is a cold place in the dead of winter. Hope to have the vet out this week to give him a once over but dont expect there is anything wrong. The other 2 horse he was with went to good homes too.
