    Needs muscle

    Hello all, I have a 22yr old that just seems to be losing more muscle by the day. SHe is getting bonier up top but she looks like a tick about to bust in the belly. I've always had to ration her feed because she'll eat til she drops. I've probably been feeding her too much. I started feeding senior equine about a week ago along with her grain.

    She's wormed regularly and isn't sick or anything like that and she acts fine, just losing muscle mass. About the only time she gets rode anymore is when a beginner comes around and that isn't very often, so she doesn't get much exercise anymore.

    Is there anything else I can do to get mass back on her or is this just the way they age?

    I am willing to bet the reason why she is losing muscle mass is because she isn't being used. Make sure that her diet is balanced with enough protein to help with muscle growth and have someone mildly work her a few times a week. Those older horses who are still sound with no serious health issues tend to live longer if they have a frequent job as opposed to just standing around.
