He's been off for a year and six months. I've only owned him for the six months, before then he was in 24/7 pasture with three others, rotated between three paddocks (two were maybe an acre and a half each and had spotty grass growth, and the third was three or four acres with some nice grass). But, where he was previously at, he also got ZERO hay and like 6 lbs of grain a day.

Since I'm pretty much on my own paying for him and I'm also a student, I can't afford to put my whole paycheck into boarding him somewhere just for the grass. Maybe when I get a full time job, or I get another pay raise, but I'll have to evaluate that as it comes. I wish I could though, I already spend more than I should on him. (I've paid my bank hundreds in overdraft fees because I just have to have that liniment or something like that, lol)

I'm thinking of moving to Ocala, or somewhere else in general thats a little bit more "horse country" and less of suburbia. But again, we'll see.

I found some supplements you might want to try giving him, im looking going to be picking up a free sample for the ulcers to see what it is like.

Yea-Sacc is a Colic Preventer, i would suggest that. (its made by Farnam)
Looks like this the bucket (60 day supply)
http://images.farnam.com/Horse/Produ...lb_3005208.jpg

here are more :
Farnam - Your partner in horse care

The supplement im getting a pretty big free trial of :
Gastra-FX Equine Ulcer Formula

And : Biotic 8 Probiotic and Digestive Tract Formula

Also another Supplement is :
Corta-Flx U-Gard 2X - Dover Saddlery.

I hope this helps abit, and i hope you find a job and i would take alook to see if there are any stables that are in your price range that can meet your horses needs :)

It seems odd to me that paying for full turn out would be more than stall board; but then, maybe that's because of where I was born and raised, in MN. Pasture board, or full turn out type board was WAY cheaper, than stall, or partial turn out type board.

I don't know what feeding Alfalfa or Alfalfa mix pellets would cost or if it would help him out, because of the no grain factor? I know it costs less than feeding actual grain for me, and I feel 'better' about it! Haha. I just have mineral blocks out for them as far as supplements, and can get them tested if I suspect anything is deficient.

It's not that full pasture board is more expensive....its finding a place that has grass for him to eat that's way more expensive.

He's already fed alfalfa (I talked with my BO about switching his feed/upping his hay, etc. and she said they've managed to get rid of their coastal type hay, and just buy the compressed bales, and its still cheaper, so we should be able to find something that works without me having to pay more per month) but I don't want to give him anymore because he already pees a huge amount as it is and I dont want him standing in a puddle all day, and he INHALES it so it offers nothing for a distraction.....plus being a compressed bale, it would be hard to hang in a bag for him to snack on during the day.

I've pretty much decided that the only thing he's getting supplement wise is something for his joints. That should save me a bit of money

I have posted supplements that will help him alot. I really do hope you look into purchasing at least ONE of them for him, they last a rather long time.

I definitely have, I'm going to try and see if feeding him more, i.e a more natural foraging habit will get him to stop cribbing and fix his (probable) ulcers.

I have already used the U-Guard and it didn't work, as far as im concerned, or it did and it hasn't had an effect on his cribbing. As far as I know, he has never colicked, even when moved from the track out to the pasture 24/7, so thats not/shouldn't be a problem. If we do decide to put him back on the probiotic, I'll probably just put him back on the one he was on before, Optizyme. It costs 20 dollars a bag and lasts me almost three months.

i see, well how long have you had him on the U-Gaurd ?
The colic thing is to help prevent your horse from getting it as easily, because as mentioned having a cribber does increase the chance of colic, thats why i recommended it so that you are on the safe side, or have a medication on the side if he does colic, i saw some that helps them if they were to colic. Im going to get it so if it ever happens and the vet cant get here right away than i can at least HELP my horse in some way you know :) ?

Better Safe Than Sorry.

He was on it for the 30 days, which I think is how long it says it takes to work (I think the package says 28, but a month at any measurement). I'm actually quite surprised, he's been off of the pro biotic for like almost six weeks now (I ran out half way through last month and then after talking with my BO we decided he could safely come off of it) and hasn't even had a gassy episode. We have banamine on hand, and there is an 24 hour emergency vet clinic in our area, plus I have his vets number, and the barn has three additional vets that they also use. One of our trainers has LOTS of experience with colics (her gelding has had four colic surgeries to date, I think hes 12), so that also makes me feel a little safer.

But I do worry a lot about that, I actually just thought about it last night! (I was reading bubblegum's thread about her colt with colic) But other than hoping and praying, theres nothing really that I can do, since I can't seem to find anything that sells the Yea-Sacc in the 60 day supply online for pricing purposes (I don't use SmartPak, but on there its 11 dollars a day)
