I was just given a horse. Cass is a 24 y/o arabian and the first time I saw him was a couple of weeks ago. His was trickling watery blood from his right nostril. I didn't think anything of it at the time but its been two weeks and he's still got a bloody nose. I heard weather can cause it and it has been really crazy (hot dry wet cold) in the past few weeks. I can't seem to find the cause to it. Any ideas? It doesn't seem to be bothering him and he's not acting any different. How worried should I be?:?
Oh yeah and I forgot to add: I've heard about it happening after exercise but Cass has been a pasture horse for the past 6 years and the previous owner hasn't ridden him in that time.
i would get your vet out there to see him. nose bleeds can be cause by dry weather and stress but it can also be a sign of an increase in intercranial pressure (i.e. tumors, swelling) i would definatly get him checked but don't freak out cause it could be nothing serious. my friend's gelding has thin membranes in his nasal cavity and sometimes even a sneeze can cause him to bleed.
