This is my first post to the forum. Hopefully someone can give me some advice. I got a TB mare in Jan from a breeder. He told me there was a slight chance that she was in foal...well, she is! I'm excited, but also a bit scared....we've never had a foal before. Anyway, the mare has a wound on her hock. It actually looks like she filleted the top layer of skin off. She has no lameness and it doesn't seem to hurt her at all. There is a bit of swelling down her cannon, but not much. Since she is about to foal, we haven't been giving her any bute, but I was wondering if after the foal is born, we should give her some for the swelling. I've searched the net, but can't find much about nursing mares and bute. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!
NSAIDS can be absorbed into the body and passed into the mares milk. This is really something you need to consult a veterinarian about for the safety of the foal.
Good luck with your mares foaling though! I hope you all have a healthy baby.
We had a beautiful foal early this morning and everything went great! My mare is a great mommy, and her little guy is very handsome. It took him a little while to nurse, after about 2 hrs without finding the teat, we had to help him, but once he did he was a very happy boy. He's almost 24hrs old, but still a bit wobbly...is this normal? I'm a bit of a worrier! Thanks
my goodness Trish your little colt is gorgeous and looks JUST like my little colt that was born a week ago! don't worry though my guy took 3 hours to finally drink. but it only took him 30 minutes after standing to pass his meconium. and it took him an hour to stand. and he was wobbly for a day or 2. but otherwise very healthy. this is definitely my first foal and i understand the worry lol i am a huge worrier too and i worry about everything as well!
Ididn't sleep much last night, but I could have....I went out early this morning and he was just standing there looking at me swishing his adorable little tale. He passed his meconium about 30 min after he started nursing. He sounds like a little pig when he's nursing its funny! But he nurses several times an hour. He does have a little diarrihea (sp)..its not watery just a little loose! I love this forum....its great to talk to people who know much more about this stuff than me. Thanks!!
