I use witch hazel as a topical treatment for swelling. I don't dilute it, simply apply it to unbroken skin with a cotton ball. I have used it on both my horses and myself with success for minor issues.
I sure as heck wouldn't want to use it on a sheath! It's along the lines of rubbing alcohol as far as what it feels like on your skin and it BURNS if you hit a raw spot. I've never used it on a horse but have poured it in my bath for sore muscles.
interesting. I do not use it and did not know it burned ! I will not purchase that product. I cannot tell if there is broken skin under all the hair on the legs or rest of the horses body .

JCnGrace... lol.. that would be my luck , epitaph.. killed while sheath cleaning..
I laugh because I did have a horse that would cow kick me every single time, even while doped, and he had knocked me loopy a few times.
I had been looking for an antibacterial anti fungal type spray on to leave.
I have diluted in water some a+d for the outside of his sheath and he stands for that to be sprayed. All of the swellings are reducing.. so I should just be patient ( lol)
and give this time to resolve.
If he is still swollen when all the rain stops ,so we can get the trailer down the road, I will make hubby haul him back to the Vet.
Try some Vetericyn. It comes I. A spray bottle of either pure liquid or gel.
Even DH says he has never seen "snake oil" that works miracles like Vetericyn does.
It is the one medicated "thing" that is all purpose and safe for spray in in the sheath.
Even if the sheath is clean, he may still have a big bean inside the urethra. Duke (my avatar) was the horse that would gently "pop" me with his leg if I tried to get too personal, lollol. Years ago, the vet had to sedate Duke and pulled a bean the size of a quarter out of the urethra.
All I can say is good luck, I don't envy you, lollol
I have used the vetercyn in the past. GOOD NEWS... almost all of the swelling is gone. There is still a tiny bit by his armpit/chest , all the belly edema is gone, and slight amount on his sheath at the end. BUT he did extend today to pee and the 'unit' does not appear to be dirty or have a been at the tip . Not sure if the proper term would be allowed , therefore, the slang of unit. I had been spraying every other day or so, a diluted mix of a+D cream and hydro cortisone with a shampoo I got for greasy heels and other skin conditions just a small amount of the shampoo and only on the outside of the sheath. The spray of A+D and hydro cortisone I would attempt to spray up into the sheath.
I wouldn't use Witch hazel simply because oil based lotions work better on cleaning sheaths and udders but it's safe to use - it doesn't burn - its the base ingredient for lots of eye drops. It's probably one of the ingredients in that product because of its soothing and cleaning properties
QUOTE from here Optrex sore eyes 'Optrex sore eyes eye drops contain the active ingredient hamamelis water, otherwise known as distilled witch hazel. Witch hazel has cooling and mild astringent actions. The eye drops are soothing and cleansing and can be used to provide relief from sore, irritated or tired eyes caused by dusty or smoky atmospheres, driving or close work. They can be used as often as needed.'
Jaydee... I was not using any product on the interior of his sheath. The only product I ever use for internal cleaning is specialized soap or ivory soap diluted.
The horses swellings are reducing, almost gone now, and he is extending when urinating. i really think the combo of the meds and the diluted diaper rash ointment made into a spray did the trick.
Plus the cooler weather was a great thing.
