I live in Northern Nevada, and my horse has 5 small raised bumps on his back. They are VERY painful for him, I can't even touch him without him practically dropping to the ground. I'm thinking they are some kind of parasite, and I have to call the vet out, but I was wondering if anyone has had anything similar to this happen? He doesn't have ringworm and there are no sores. He isn't broke to ride yet, so it doesn't have anything to do with a saddle. Can anyone clue me in?
Ive never heard of them. Poor baby. I don't think it would be ringworm, just something on the skin or an old injury maybe?
When is the vet coming out? Keep us updated.
Cattle grubs. The fly larva penetrates the skin and causes a lump where the larva are. The area needs to be opened and the larva removed because the larva don't finish their life-cycle.
We do have cows nearby, so it could definitely be that or bot fly larva. What I am hoping is that it is a horse fly bite and it will go away on its own. I'm going to give it a couple of days since I don't ride him and medicate it myself and hope that he feels better. If not, I'll get the vet out on Monday or Tuesday to see exactly what it is. Given the pain associated with it, I'm thinking it is probably something a little more severe than a horse fly bite. You can't see the bumps at all, you can only feet them. I am so buying him a sheet today!
