Smile Pea sized knot on neck and back flank

I took my coat off my horse today because it's going to be warm and when in was grooming her I found several pea sized to pearl sized hard knots spread out on her back flank and one on her neck. When I messed with them she seemed as if it hurt a little or seamed irritated when I messed with it. Should I be concerned or does anyone know what this may be?
