Oh my Gosh! I just was searching HF for anything on pigeon fever, I just had the vet out not an hour ago, and she thinks my "Sunflower" has pigeon fever.

She did say this is not the season for it, as it is mainly spread by horn flies, but it could have been incubating or forming the abcess for months.

I don't know much about it.

I read your other post and my vet said that it can, besides being transmitted by flies, it can be soil borne, so after she lanced it and while it is draining that my horse should be in the stall, so as not to contaminate the pasture. When the abscess is draining is when it is contagious.
After she lanced the abscess, I also hosed and bleached the floor. I also need to change clothes after flushing out the wound before handling the other horses.

I know a lady that has a horse with that she wont keep it away from the other horses and she wont get it treated and the poor horse has a giant wound its terrible and in a lot of pain.

If your horse thinks your the greatest person in the world dont seek a second opinion.
