My new horse, Texas, has a very pink nose and I am wondering if it will definitely require protective attention (ie. fly veil w/ nose flap, zinc etc.)
and if so, what works best?
If a horse has a pink nose (in Australia it is Summer - very hot, so I will definitely need to deal with this right away) does this mean that if exposed to the sun during the day, it will definitely get burned?
I had an old Arab with a blaze and he got burned quite badly if we didn't tend to it by applying zinc; but he got to hating it so much that as soon as he caught site of the tube, he'd run for it. Are there any alternatives that work just as well, if not better, than zinc?
My horse chucky has a very pink nose and it can get qite sunburnt in the middle of summer. I just put zinc on his nose and it works fine. just because your horse has a pink nose doesnt mean it will definately get burnt. some horses skin is more sensitive than others. i find zinc to be the easiest thing to use but if he doesnt like it i think a nose flap will work just as well.
Yeah you will need to put some sunblock on it. My paint horse had a pink nose and did have problems in the summer. We put zinc-oxide (sunblock they use on babies) on his pink nose. It is safe and works very well. They also have fly masks that have nose covers and have UV protection.
I know in the summer we put sunscreen on light colored noses. Baby safe sunscreen is horse safe unless they have preexisting health issues with breathing. Or just put on a full fly mask with the flap to cover the nose. I know some now have UV protection on them too.
As others have suggested, zinc oxide or sunscreen work extremely well. It's a lot better to prevent a sunburn from happening than have to deal with it afterwards.
I purchased a fly veil with a canvass nose flap on it - thanks guys
I don't think he's ever worn one before, but he's already pretty chilled about it, so I hope not to encounter any problems!
