Planting a field

We are planning on plowing up a field this spring and re-planting it. It's about 5 acres in size and then we plan on doing 2 more sections in the coming years. My question is what is best to plant? We have 2 horses and a steer that would be in there. Scooter is older (29) and not such an easy keeper anymore, but Hunter (9) and Herman (steer) are definitely easy keepers. Our summers are fairly short. I live in Upper Michigan and it's still cool right now. The grass is just beginning to green but there are still some snow piles. They say our growing season is about 85 days on average. Grass of course comes earlier and stays later, but that gives you an idea..

I don't think you can ever go wrong with Bermuda. But there are websites out there specifically about grass. You'll want to pick one that goes with your region #. Most of what I've researched say that the area needs to lay fallow for up to a year for the grass to establish.

Okay. Thanks guys! I just was wondering if there are things horses prefer and whatnot that would grow well up here. I will do some more poking around online as well to see what else I can find.
