Exclamation Poncho's Head injury:/ recovery thread..

I've decided that Im going to keep track of how Poncho recovers from this head injury the other day. Went outside the other night to find a big gash in his head. Took him to the vet yesterday morning and this is the outcome

- I have to feed him 8 tablets of TMZ 2 times a day.. mixing it with some water and putting it in some grain. He is on Bute 1 gram 2 times a day until tonight.. unless he seems off still....

I am having one problem already... He doesn't want to eat grain.. Normally he scarfs down his grain and now he won't barely touch it. Does anyone have ways to feed this pills to him? I was thinking since the desolve in water I could like hollow out a piece of apple and put the desolved pills inside of that.. but then again I don't know if that would work..

Any Ideas??

Also, since this is a head injury.. He is a bit headshy now.. What can I start working on now to make sure that he isnt headshy later on..:/

You could make the pills into a runny paste and put the paste in a syringe. Cut open the end of the syringe to make a bigger hole, and give it like wormer.

Sounds like he doesn't like the taste of the TMZ tablets, maybe put something sweet in his grain along with it, like molasses, the hollowed out apple sounds like a good idea, too.

Hope he gets better soon!

I never thought about that. That is a good idea. I will talk to my parents about that! Thanks!

After a head injury I always expect a head shy horse. Just carry a few treats with you, and while he reaches for a treat try to pet his nose or his cheek. I rescued an abuse horse with a broken eye socket and I sat there and did that for three hours straight so we could get him to leave the auction house!! I'm sorry to hear about your precious boy :( Poor boy :( Looks like a nasty wound!

What we did with the bute horses (I didn't agree, but the technique works) was crush the pills up and mix with applesauce and give it as wormer. The applesauce gives the incentive to take it :p

I always suggest asking a vet/dr about crushing pills before you do so. Crushing a pill can change the composition slightly so if something is supposed to be time-release at all, it won't be. Always check before you crush a pill and administer it.

I just went out to check on him.. He hasnt ate his grain so I will try some of the suggestions tonight.. BUT the good news is.. He isn't at all head shy. I could pet his ear his face everywhere.. then again.. I just gave him bute a bit ago.. He does mind when I tried to spray some vetricyn on it and take some close pictures.. but that will be okay. Im glad that it is already looking better.. and

Yeah It was pretty nasty.. you chould see his skull0_0

Pictures attached are how he looks today.. and also where he cut himself.. the fence..

The vet told us to crush them up or put them in water to dissolve:)

Also, karo syrup works to help disguise the taste of meds. First put some on just plain grain , so he can get used to the taste and think hmm this is pretty yummy nothing hiding in this, then you can add the meds.

I would not spray the wound with anything while there are stitches. This could cause problems . You need to ask the VET about spraying the Vetericyn on the stitches. I have always been told to leave a stitched area alone, to keep it dry. (even on myself and it sucks not being able to shower with stiches in your knee or leg )
