pony with diarrhea :(

My 18 yo grey gelding pony has diarrhea....it seems to come in bouts then disappear for a few days.....he's always wormed and is in a paddock with other horses that arnt showing any symptoms...hes slowly loosing weight but hasnt lost his appetite...i havent had his teeth done in the last 2 years... could bad teeth cause diarrhea?? He also has melanomas on his anus could these be causing the diarrhea?? Any ideas??

Is the pony under vet care right now? If not that is the first thing I would do. And make sure he's drinking plenty of water.

I wouldn't hazard a guess online about the diarrhea, could be anything. Stress, illness etc. And get the teeth done!

I'd def be calling the vet. It can be SO many things, and horses stomachs are not to be played with.

Diarreah is a pretty serious problem. I'd probably have the vet out. There are a couple things I would look at though, one is what type of soil do you have? Are you feeding him outside? If he's eathing outside and then spilling his food on the ground, then picking it up, he could be suffering from sand in his belly. You could attempt a round of sandclear to see if it would help. I don't think it would hurt.

The other thing you could try is mixing some yogurt into his feed to see if he's got some bacteria in his system. But I would probably go ahead and make a vet call...
